The institutions of government now believe that they must keep very important information from the American public for their own good. The issue is one of mentality. Most Americans distrust their government, but they're not willing to take that extra step and pull that string a little further. The more you pull, the more everything we think we know about the world unravels. If the government is complacent in covering up evidence for 9/11, what else would they be capable of doing? If the government made up Al-Qaeda to win a prosecution, would they be willing to continue the lie to justify empire expansion? If the government lies about capturing and killing Ayyub al-Masri every so often to get some good news in the press, what would they not be willing to lie about? This is the nature of our secretive, corporate, and bureaucratic shaping of humanity. Even the "terrorist" attacks against Southpark where false flag. Politicians accept the Machiavellian approach without question, because that is the only way to get elected. Under our current system, no one could get elected that spoke the truth.

Knowledge is become more and more free. Once information is released it is nearly impossible to suppress it. This means immortality and super powers for those who wish. You may choose to be against it, but others will not. The fight will be very different from the abortion battle, gay rights battle, and drug prohibition battles, but free will always wins out. Progress can not be stopped by anything short of an empire collapse similar to Rome (which some groups are aiming for). But any modern collapse would still leave enough data to bring the next civilization to the singularity again, and sooner.
